Commander Tim Cast 091

Episode 91 comin’ at ya! And to make up for the rather light load of topics last week, we’re overcompensating (as we are known to do). There is a fantastic amount of things going on this time;

  • Lots of Pink Ninja Studios news, including a facelift for JargonGnome and Gaming Clarity
  • Sega Rally 3 is in arcades… sadly, none near me
  • Duke Nukem Forever gameplay. No, this isn’t the start of a joke. It’s real.
  • Billy Mitchell gets his own trading card… only 3 more signs of the apocalypse to go!

And that’s just a taste! Listen to the show for the whole scoop, and hit the jump to get links for everything we discussed. Oh, and for some reason, this episode contains more vulgar conversations and language than usual. Viewer discretion is advised.

JargonGnome got itself a huge face lift this week! The site looks fucking beautiful thanks to the illustrious Edgey and his fabulous doodles, and the mad code monkey and layout skills of Carolyn. If you’ve never checked out the JargonGnome podcast or website, now is the time to start!

Gaming Clarity was also on the list of upgrades this week! Whole new (and simplified) layout, much lighter code (because it was a bloated fat pig before), and it also doesn’t break in every fucking browser on the planet! W007! I should also mention that I’m finished being a slacker on the site. MacDragon, Audiohawk, IronPirate and Matt Faustini did a wonderful job keeping the torches lit while I was being a bitch. Kudos to them! Oh, and the I’m also not being so pretentious this time around. No more of that “Honest opinion, news you won’t find anywhere” bullshit. Yes, there is still news. Yes, it is still from our viewpoint. And yes, it’s still a great place to find some stuff you might not see anywhere else. However, more than anything, it’s a great place to just kick back and revel in your love of gaming. We even have a new tagline to reflect it; We love games more than our families. Check it out!

Commander Tim was a guest on Artificial InteleGENTS this week! As usual, a fun time. Although I’m positive I pissed off Hypersteric more than a few times. What can I say? I’m a giant asshole.

Oh, and I’m pimpin’ a blog run by a local fellow retro gaming nut;
The owner is my friend Adam, and he is the shit. The home base of the Retro Game Party, and on top of that, he’s a hell of a nice fella. CountZer0 will face-palm you if you don’t click over.

Sega Rally 3
No, not the recent XBox 360 thing. This is a game that was developed at the same time by the now defunct Sega Racing Studio. While it shares the same engine and graphics, the gameplay has been tweaked to more closely resemble the Sega Rally games of old. It looks fantastic, and they designed what is being called “the best motion cabinet ever constructed” to house it. Oh, how I do hope I get to play this.

Duke Nukem Forever gameplay footage!
Well it’s been 13 years, three engines, a ton of developers, and one very long forum joke, but here it is. The new show show from Jace Hall, CEO of Monolith Software, scored a chance to play the game at the 3D Realms offices, and also had a brief interview with the heads of 3D Realms. Classic moment; when he point blank asks them “What the FUCK took so long?”

Billy Mitchell is the first ever gamer to be featured on a bubble gum card.
File this one under “WTF?”. Apparently, Topps (the baseball card company) is producing a Billy Mitchell trading card later this summer. It’s in recognition for this amazing abilities and achievements in gaming. Rumor has it that it’s part of a larger series which focuses on top competitors in various sports. Ok, Billy Mitchell is a bit of a giant douchebag, but the brother’s got skillz. Grats.

Commando 3 release date is officially official… we mean it this time.
Well, the time has finally arrived. On June 11th, gamers will witness the first round in the four shot retro revival from Capcom. We’ve talked about this a bit on the Commander Tim Cast before, but now that it’s so close, I’m getting giddy! Expect lots of huge destruction and retro shmuping goodness. Oh, and don’t forget that if you’re in the U.S., your purchase of Commando 3 gets you into the beta test for Street Fighter II HD Remix. That is, if nasty fucking artwork strapped to a fucking classic game is your thing.

Random Pimpage: I want to bring some joy to the comic fans who listen to the show. If you haven’t checked out Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog yet, then you don’t know the meaning of the word funny. This bastard is as hopelessly lost to comic books as I am to old video games, and he’s also a serious competitor in the Friday Night Fights hosted by Bahlactus. Seriously, do yourselves a favor and read this shit! http://www.the-isb.com

    In a previous episode it’s “Is console gaming killing PC Gaming?” This week it’s “Everything is basically a PC.” Oh my head spins at the complexity of the gaming universe.

    P.S. Minutes 27:09 to 28:08 should be deleted. LMAO

    In relation to the subject in the show, everything is basically off the shelf hardware these days. Custom Motorola 68ks and Hitachi SH2s don’t have a place in the modern “build with the intention of porting it” mentality. This generation of consoles are all running IBM sourced PowerPC procs, some have been overcomplicated to the point of stupidity *cough*Cell*cough*, but it’s all the same compile on the general runtime. The real separator in the PC vs. Console debate is expandability and control methods.

    And yeah, watch out for that one minute… it’s a doozy. ;-)
