Commander Tim Cast 094

What up people?!? Quick and dirty post this time. On this episode, Kevin Belton (aka DrKillJoy) and Carolyn join me for a total off-the-cuff PC building nerd-out. I finally settled on the components of the new PC build, and since Carolyn now has her iBook as her portable, I share my thoughts on using the Eee PC as the ultimate portable Windows XP machine. Big caution on this one; we are NERDS. Lots of speeds and feeds talk. So unless intricate conversations about how you should choose your next power supply purchase is of interest to you, best to steer clear. But listen anyway, you know you want to.

Sounds like you are shooting for quiet computer. I just purchased the Scythe Ninja Mini CPU cooler. If you have good airflow within your case, you may be able to turn off the CPU fan and passively cool (heatsink only). I am going to give it a try, let you know how it goes.
As far as UMPCs, I plan on getting the MSI Wind when it hits the streets in about a week. http://is.gd/JJN
Quiet and energy efficient are my goals. I’m using the original Antec Sonata case that I purchased a few years ago for the new build. I’d replace it with the newer version of it that’s out there, but nothing on the internals has changed, just the outside cosmetics. I’ll leave the CPU cooler on for sure. The Intel stock coolers for the Wolfdale Core 2 chips are actually rated fairly well for being quiet, so I’ll hold off on an aftermarket cooler for now. A little bit of noise is just fine, I’m just trying to get away from the wind-tunnel I have now. It sounds like the hangar bay of a Star Destroyer currently.
