Comcast opens the pipes – 50mbps is here
As gamers, we all want our online experience to be as smooth as it possibly can be. I mean, when I’m turning other players’ heads into a fine red mist, I don’t want to see any stutter in my internet connection. I want to take the shot, teabag my fallen victim, and go about my day with as little lag as possible. We just might get to see that day, because on April 3rd, Comcast debuted its 50mbps cable internet option to home users in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area, which happens to be right where I live. It’s shocking to see such a ginourmous pipe available for home use, but I guess those are the times we live in. It raises another question for me, though; isn’t Comcast the one who has been performing some rather dramatic packet-shaping techniques to destroy BitTorrent performance for their users, even if the person is using it for completely legal reasons? Doesn’t Comcast realize that people with this fast a connection are likely to be people who frequently use BitTorrent clients? I’m not necessarily the smartest person to ever write articles on a gaming blog, but it seems like a fairly obvious thing to me.
So what does it take to get to this bandwidth utopia? Oh, only about $149.95 per month for home users, $199.95 for business users. Hmph, I want the stutters in Counterstrike Source matches to be reduced as much as anyone, but for those prices I think I’m going to stick to screaming “F**KING LAG!” at the top of my lungs. It’s far cheaper, and is mildly therapeutic. Thanks anyway, Comcast.
